Great! Now listen to the story “The Fish and the Ring”.

Once upon a time there lived a Baron who had magical powers. He could look into the future due to his magic book.

One day he looked into his young son’s future. He saw a baby girl from a very poor family. His son would marry that girl one day. That news made him sad.

Luckily, the Baron knew the baby’s father. He decided to visit the man. The Baron took his horse and rode to the house of the baby’s father.

When he arrived, he saw the poor man. The Baron came closer and asked him:

“What’s wrong, my friend? You look so sad!”

“Well, sir, I’ve already got five children. And I don’t have enough money to feed them all. Now I have a sixth child. It’s a baby girl. And I don’t know where to find enough food to feed six children!”

“Don’t worry. I can help you with that. I have always wanted a daughter. I can take your baby girl to my castle.”

“Oh, that would be great! Thank you so much, sir!” – said the poor man and smiled.

Then he went into the house, took his baby daughter and gave her to the Baron. The Baron took the baby, got on his horse and rode away.

Before riding home to his castle, the Baron rode to the river. There he dropped the baby girl into the fast-moving water and rode away. However, the baby didn’t sink in the river. She floated and floated.

Finally, the baby girl came near a fisherman’s house. The fisherman saw the child, took her out of the water and decided to keep the baby.

One day the Baron and his friends stopped at the fisherman’s house for a drink. A young girl brought them drinks, and they all thought that she was beautiful. Then the Baron asked the girl:

“Girl, tell me, when were you born?”

“I’m sorry, sir, but I don’t know. I was saved from the river fifteen years ago.”

The Baron looked at her with surprise. That young girl was his son’s future wife. Then he left the fisherman’s house without saying a word. His friends went after him.

A few days later the Baron returned to the fisherman’s house, found the girl and asked her for help. He told her to take one important letter to his brother in the town of Scarborough. The girl agreed to do that. In that letter the Baron ordered his brother to kill the poor girl.

On the way to Scarborough the girl spent the night at a country inn. In the middle of the night the robbers broke into the inn. They found the Baron’s letter. Then they opened the letter, read it and felt sorry for the girl. After that the main robber took a pen and a paper and wrote the following letter:

“Dear brother,

I would like this girl to marry my son immediately.

Your brother,

Albert.”

The robbers left the new letter on the table and took the old one. When the girl woke up, she took the letter and continued her little journey.

When she arrived at the brother’s castle, she gave him the letter. The Baron’s brother read it and ordered to prepare a wedding. At the same day the girl and the Baron’s son got married.

Just after the wedding the Baron visited his brother’s castle. He was shocked to hear the news. After that the Baron decided to kill the girl himself.

He took her to the cliffs and wanted to throw the girl into the sea, but she started begging him:

“Please, don’t kill me. I will do whatever you want.”

Then the Baron took off his gold ring, threw it into the sea and said:

“Do not return to our family without that ring!”

Then the Baron left.

The girl walked and walked, and at last she came to a nobleman’s castle. The girl became a cook there. One day the nobleman ordered her to cook dinner for his guests. The girl started to clean a large fish when suddenly she saw something shiny inside the fish’s mouth. It was a gold ring. The girl put the ring on her finger and continued cooking. Finally, the dinner was ready.

The nobleman’s guests loved the delicious fish, so they wanted to know who had cooked it. The nobleman called a boy and told him:

“Go to the kitchen and find the cook. Ask her to come here.”

The boy went to the kitchen and called the girl. When she came closer to the guests, she recognized the Baron, his brother and her husband. When the Baron looked at her hand, he recognized his gold ring.

At last, he understood. He couldn’t change the future. Then the Baron smiled and told all the guests that she was his son’s wife.

After that the Baron, his son and the girl returned to the Baron’s castle and lived there happily ever after.

– Wow! That was an interesting fairy tale.

– Yes, it’s true! Thank you, Charlie!

– You’re welcome, boys. Now let’s find out how carefully you listened to this story.
