Мальчик Бен приходит в туристическое агентство, где хочет узнать больше о турах в Европу (после того, как вернулся из международного Исследовательского клуба), и при разговоре с владелицей, допускает ошибку в употреблении выражений have been to и have been in. Добрая владелица агентства взялась объяснить Бену разницу между этими выражениями (плюс have gone to), и подарила ему книгу для закрепления данного теоретического материала.

B1. I`ve always dreamt of going to Europe. Now, thanks to the club work I`ve made friends with many teens all over the world. Oh, look! The travel agency! I`ll come in to find out the terms of going somewhere next holidays.

… I. G. Good afternoon. May I help you?

B2. Could you help me to find out about some tours to Europe, please?

I. G. With pleasure. Have you ever been to any European country?

B1. You know, I`ve been in Poland once. And now I`d like to go on a tour to explore Europe.

I.G. I`m sorry for interrupting you, but we don`t say “I`ve been in Poland once”. It`s not correct. Извините, что перебиваю вас, но мы не говорим “I`ve been in Poland once”.

B1. Really? And what is the mistake?

I.G. Look here: … I`ve got a book which will help you to speak about your traveller`s experience with no mistakes.

We`ve got three similar word combinations: ‘have/has gone to, have/has been to, have/has been in’. Посмотрите, есть три похожих выражения ‘have/has gone to, have/has been to, have/has been in’. It seems that they are translated as synonyms. But it`s not like that. Кажется, что они имеют синонимичный перевод (то есть похожий перевод). Но это не так!

B1. But look: have/has gone to – ездил в/ходил в; have/has been to – был в; have been in – был в. They are very similar. Они очень похожи.

I. G. You are not quite right. Вы не совсем правы. Look: Ben has gone to Chicago. The word combination ‘has gone to’ means that Ben is still there or on his way to the city of Chicago. Посмотрите: Ben has gone to Chicago. Выражение ‘has gone to’ обозначает, что Бен все еще там или только на пути в город Чикаго.

Pay attention to the following example: Ben has been to Chicago. обратите внимание на следующий пример: Ben has been to Chicago. What`s the difference between these sentences? Посмотрите, в чем разница между этими предложениями? Ben has gone to Chicago. And: Ben has been to Chicago. Here we use the verb ‘be’: ‘has been to’. And this word combination means that Ben has visited Chicago and he`s back now. А вот выражение ‘have/has been to)

обозначает, что Бен ездил в Чикаго, но уже вернулся. And this is the word combination that you had to use to speak about going to Poland.

B1. Oh, I see. I should have said: “I`ve been to Poland” and not “I`ve been in Poland”. Мне следовало сказать: “I`ve been to Poland” and not “I`ve been in Poland”.

By the way, what does ‘have/has been in’ mean? Кстати, что же тогда обозначает выражение ‘have/has been in’?

I.G. ‘have/has been in’ means that you are still there now. Look: Ben has been in Chicago for 3 years. Бен находится в Чикаго уже 3 года. Он все еще там. And this is the correct meaning of the word combination ‘have/has been in’ – все еще быть/находиться в каком-либо месте.

B 2. Indira, thank you very much! I`ve never heard of this difference.

B 1. But to do the task correctly, first I have to revise the difference between these phrases: …

‘Have/has gone to’ means that the person is there or on his way to the place. ‘Have/has gone to’ обозначает, что человек еще там, либо на пути к какому-либо месту. ‘Have/has been to’ means that the person has visited the place but he`s back now. ‘Have/has been to’ обозначает, что человек посещал какое-либо место, но уже вернулся. Именно это выражение мы и используем для описания прошлых визитов в страны и города. ‘Have/has been in’ means that the person is still there. А вот выражение ‘have /has been in’ обозначает, что человек все еще там.

And now is the task. Use the correct word combination to complete the following sentences: have/has been to, have/has gone to, have/has been in.

Vlad: Where is Rick? I haven`t seen him for hours.

Kirill: He …………………. the airport to meet the participants from Scotland.

Vlad: Scotland? It`s a wonderful country. I …………………. Scotland only once but I fell in love with its people and nature.

Kirill: And how long ………………..you …….. Scotland?

Vald: About a week. We had a month tour round Great Britain.

Kirill: I ………….never …………… England or Scotland. It`s always been my dream.

Where is Rick? I haven`t seen him for days. - He …………………. the airport to meet the participants from Scotland. ММММ…Где Рик? Я его не видел уже несколько часов! - Он уехал в аэропорт встречать участников из Шотландии. It means that he hasn`t come back yet. Это значит, что он еще не вернулся. So we need ‘have/has gone to’. And so as Rick is 3^rd person singular, we use ‘has gone to’. А так как Рик – это 3-е лицо, единственное число (можно заменить местоимением ‘he – он’), мы используем вспомогательный глагол has. He has gone to the airport to meet the participants from Scotland.

The next point: Scotland? It`s a wonderful country. I …………………. Scotland only once but I fell in love with its people and nature. Шотландия? Чудесная страна! Я …. был там всего один раз, но я влюбился в ее людей и природу. This sentence means that he`s visited Scotland but now he`s back. Это предложение обозначает, что он посещал Шотландию, но уже вернулся. So, we use ‘have been to’. I have been to Scotland.

And Kirill asks: “And how long ………………..you …….. Scotland?” Кирилл спрашивает: "Как долго ты был в Шотландии?” То есть, как долго ты оставался внутри страны. We use ‘have been in’ to express this meaning in English. “And how long have you been in Scotland?”

Look, the answer is: “About a week. We had a month tour round Great Britain.”

And the last point: “I ………….never …………… England or Scotland. It`s always been my dream.” Я никогда не был в Англии или Шотландии. Но это всегда была моя мечта. It means that Kirill speaks about his visits, his experiences. Это значит, что Кирилл говорит о своих визитах, жизненном опыте. So, we use ‘have/has never been to’. And the subject is ‘I’, so we use ‘have never been to’. I have never been to England or Scotland.
